About
I am a sociologist with expertise in the areas of new media (particularly social media), gender and sexuality, cultural studies, media and communications, journalism, critical social theory, feminist theory, science and technology studies and internet research methodologies.
My current positions and affiliations include Adjunct Professor in the Pauline Jewett Institute of Women's and Gender Studies at Carleton University, SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow in the same department and Research Associate at the Simone de Beauvoir Institute at Concordia University. I'm also Secretary and on the Board of Directors of the Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre.
I have a great deal of experience teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level at universities in Canada, Scotland and China and have supervised numerous BA and MA students to successful completion.
My current SSHRC-funded project is a Canadian-wide study of teenagers' use of social media, particularly Facebook. More specifically, I am examining the ways in which teenagers talk and 'do' gender while socializing online and how this discourse relates to permissive attitudes towards gender-based violence. This work has implications for social media policies instituted by high schools and elementary schools and aims to further develop healthy relationship programming by incorporating a wider and more nuanced understanding of social media influence.
My previous and ongoing work has focused on the interrelationships between media, society and the state. These interests have led me to conduct investigations into journalism practice, particularly news production, citizen journalism and the implications of new technologies.
